Vyliak is a gargoyle, one of the oldest. His kind was created to seek out demons roaming the earth and send them back to hell. As more demons came, more gargoyles were sent down. Having previously been angels, they were holy beings. The very weapons they used to kill demons was their own weakness. While they could die from natural means, they would be reborn in a new body after some time. The only way to truly get rid of them, was to kill them with their own weapons; in the same way that the demons would descend to hell, the gargoyles would ascend back to heaven, unable to join the fight back down on earth.
Being a gargoyle, he has the ability to take the form of a stone creature. Over the centuries, he'd learned to take on different forms of stone creatures to better blend in with his surroundings. However, all creatures he could take forms of had a variation of wings, the norm for any gargoyle.
Every gargoyle has the ability to fly with their wings. While in their gargoyle'd state, they gain increased resistance to everything, though they are not impenetrable. They can stay in their gargoyle'd state for long periods of time; there is no known limit, though the longest Vyliak has stayed in this state is two years, while observing a potential target.
Vyliak in particular is skilled in hand-to-hand combat, as well as the use of spears and swords. He is highly intelligent, though he does not have any morals and no retains remorse for his actions, no matter how heinous an act he may have committed. He has long since lost his ability to do the 'right' thing by particular standards.
He is also able to adapt to any situation. After centuries of wandering, he has become a master of disguise and can easily mask his original accent. He is fluent in a number of languages, and is probably the best stalker in the world.

when everyone has lost their heads
Vyliak was a renowned member of The Order, the group the gargoyles were a part of. They were sworn to hunt down demons and protect innocents, though over the years, their motives became more and more lax, eventually to the point where it was only 'kill a demon if there is no mortal around; keep yourself hidden at all costs.' Vyliak and some others did not enjoy this, and turned their backs on the order.
Over time, Vyliak found that he and his group of renegade gargoyles were more effective, though they used means that The Order did not like. This led them to being hunted by the gargoyles, and often resulted in fights among each other. Each side suffered losses, Vyliak's more so. It came to a point where Vyliak's group was all thought to be annihilated after they lay waste to one of their refuges. Vyliak was the sole survivor, and went into hiding. Although he didn't die, he did suffer near-fatal injuries, and spent a long time recovering.
Vyliak went about his business once he'd recovered, 'blending in' with society. He became neutral in the war of gargoyles versus demons, though he still had a place in his heart that was reserved for the hate of demons. As technology advanced, he adjusted. He found himself working for numerous organizations in various countries over the years, gaining intelligence on the whereabouts of both gargoyles and demons alike.
Vyliak's most recent affiliation is with ARROW; although he isn't exactly fond of the idea of exposing everything out there, he does like the concept, and acts as some of the muscle of the organization.
He is brutal in his methods. If ARROW needs something done, Vyliak is usually the go-to guy. If someone asks him to kill someone, he'll ask the when, where, and how. If someone asks him to protect someone, he will ask for how long and what to do with those who try to harm the being he's protecting. Basically, it's a, " 'Jump,' 'How high?'" kind of relationship, currently. He is not a mindless killing machine, though. He does think for himself, and is only with ARROW because it's something new and it's to pass the time. Plus, he is interested to see what the most recent squabble between humans and everything else goes. He's seen a lot of battles in the past, and this is not the first time humans have learned they are not alone.
