" Pardon me sir, I meant not to do it." Lounging on a comfortable couch with a well worn, dog-eared copy of a novel from the Dresden Files on his lap, Tyne Hawthorne was very, very comfortable. A cup of tea sat on the low table before him, a little cloud of steam floating above it.
Neon, the sable collie-cross was curled up in his dog bed, dozing off as per usual. Tyne could work with that, yup. With snow falling lightly outside, he was very much content to stay in the warmth of the shop.
The blond was well-absorbed in the novel when the bell tinkled pleasantly, alerting him to the presence of a visitor. He tilted his head upwards, green eyes meeting another pair. A slight smile graced his features as Tyne spoke, a strong British accent easily recognisable. "How may I help you?" | |

| Sylvester seethed slightly as he made his way through Ashmill, a mildly grumpy expression on his face. He was supposed to be a full time employee. He was supposed to be guaranteed a certain number of hours. But no, his manager had told him to go home early because it was too slow to bother paying him to work. That cut into his paycheck and generally caused problems for him.
Therefore, he decided, he would kill some time, do a little retail therapy, and keep his eyes peeled for a job that would be up front with him. He wasn't actively looking to quit... yet... but it never hurt to have his options open.
It was with these thoughts in mind that Syl's nose lead him to the door of Harbin Coffee and Books. He liked coffee. He liked books. It was a good combination.
Upon stepping into the store he was wrapped in the scents of coffee and paper, with an undercurrent of dog and and something the canine young man couldn't identify. Nevertheless, he smiled slightly, his irritation at his boss soothed by the comforting smells.
"Oh, hullo," he said with a smile as he was greeted by the British sounding man. "I was just coming in to browse and stuff." He dithered for a moment. "And maybe to see if you were hiring?" he added, voice a little unsure. |

" Pardon me sir, I meant not to do it." "Sure thing. Labels are by the side of the shelves, tell me if you need anything else." Actually, the labels were handwritten in an almost cryptic, cursive font using a fountain pen. After all, Tyne had done most of his schooling under a British nobleman.
The last question caught him completely off guard, mouth hanging open for a moment before the blond regained his composure, the smile finding its way back onto his face. "I don't see why not."
To be honest, he didn't quite know how hiring worked in this world. There was a fixed number of minimum hours, and a pay, right? Meh, he could do this. In an undertone, the Brit added. "To be honest, I'm new to the hiring business. I've been running Harbin by myself for quite a while, but since there are more people now I certainly see why not if you're still up to it."
To be honest, Tyne was well-to-do, maybe even wealthy for modern standards. It wasn't as if close to 300 years had been spent doing nothing. He even had a hotel room reserved under his name for infinitely somewhere in London thanks to some special services he had performed. And a nice hotel room. And Harbin had been doing quite well, for a one-man business. As expected, starting had been slow but now it was going quite well.
The blond was jerked out of his thoughts by a peculiar sound - Neon snarling. The collie was literally the friendliest dog he knew, and now what? The only times the dog had reacted negatively was when confronted with supernatural entities... oh, right. If Tyne was in any way alarmed, he certainly didn't show it.
The collie stopped at Tyne's command - something definitely not in English, but a more guttural language. To any other person, it may have sounded like German, but was in fact a more ancient tongue. With what sounded like a huff, the collie turned twice before settling back down. A second later the canine was happily dozing off, pretty much dead to the world.

| Syl smiled at the browsing instructions, glancing around, and took a few steps further into the store. He was still a little tense about the question he'd asked, especially in light of the rather dumbfounded look on the proprietor's handsome face. Thus, he was a bit flabbergasted at the mildly flippant, but positive answer.
"Really?" he blurted. "I mean, um..." He coughed and rubbed the back of his head a bit self consciously before trotting closer to the man with the unique scent. He was stopped in his tracks by the collie's sudden snarling. His initial reflex was to curl his lips and snarl right back; to show this little pup who the real boss was. But then he remembered the presence of the other man and stepped back half a step to help suppress the rather feral instinct, a faint flush tinting his cheeks.
The little dog's sudden acquiescence to what Sylvester assumed was an order rather surprised him. He blinked at the now snoozing dog and looked at the Englishman with something akin to wonder for a moment. Could he teach him to get dogs to do that? That would be so cool!
But more to the point, the possibility of a job here. Syl crept forward cautiously so as not to disturb his fellow canine. There was no competition; he was clearly the superior specimen of dog-ness; but he couldn't very well go all dog in front of this man so the point was moot. But he could pursue the job angle and so he did.
"So um," he began. "Would you be looking for a full time or part time employee?" The answer very much affected whether or not he would keep his current job. If part time, he would cut back his hours at the music store, if full time he would quit altogether. Assuming, of course, that his potential boss's pet pooch didn't mind sharing space with another canine. There was always that. |

" Pardon me sir, I meant not to do it." The blond had watched the entire exchange, despite it being a series of restricted and subtle movements, with mild interest and a slight smile. In general, the dragon found the other's mannerisms fairly odd for one of a regular human - most would have simply stopped in their tracks or even backed away a fair bit. But then again, Neon would not have reacted in such a way to a regular human.
Again, the question left Tyne with an expression not normally seen on the pale face. But it was a good question, one that allowed green orbs to wander around as he thought. It didn't take long for him to ready an answer though. "Which would you suggest?" He grinned, reaching behind to grab the cup of tea and take a sip before continuing. "I'm not in any dire need of help at the moment, but if you have any other suggestions...?"
The collie seemed to have no further arguments with the young man, despite opening one eye to give him a wary - but much friendlier than before - look. Tyne had moved to sit on the couch again, gesturing to the seat opposite in an invitation to the other. "Anyway, what's your name? I'm Tyne."

| Syl had rather been hoping his little inadvertent reactions to the dog's display had gone unnoticed by the blond man. After all, the last thing he wanted was to deal with uncomfortable questions from a potential employer about his questionable possession of humanity. Luckily, the man didn't comment on it and Sylvester breathed a slight sigh of relief as he got closer to man and dog, keeping a sharp eye on said dog just in case. The collie seemed more subdued, but one could never be too careful.
The Englishman's grin was met with an entirely artless, genuine returning smile from the young wolfdog. "Well," he said, taking the offered seat across from him. "If you don't need much help right now part time might be the best way to go. And if things pick up enough you could always bump me up to full time if you need to." He smiled sheepishly. "I do have a job at a music store right now but the hours are pretty wibbly."
"Oh! Right..." There he'd gone, gabbing on without even a proper introduction. He flushed slightly, a weird humanoid reaction that seemed to replace the proper flattening of ears that was impossible in this shape. "I'm Syl. Well, Sylvester, but everyone pretty much calls me Syl." Belatedly, he stuck out his hand for a handshake. "It's very nice to meet you Mr. Tyne." |
