The Lirina have humanoid bodies: bipedal, two arms, one head, the usual. Their physical appearance differs only cosmetically. Their hair generally comes all the colors of the rainbow, though black is the most common color. Eye color varies wildly, from red to dark purple and more. Their ears come to a slight point, giving them an elfin look.

Lirina blood is the color of their hair and shimmers brightly in the light. This is because Lirina blood is infused with tiny crystals. These crystals react to sonic vibrations, becoming charged and helping to fuel a Lirina as an energy source (albeit one of limited use. Think of it as a sugar rush. Lirina can subsist on this only for a couple days at most. They are expected to eat to supplement this ability.) Because of this trait, Lirina are literally able to feed on music. “Good” music with a steady rhythm and harmonies are more sustaining. “Bad” music with disharmony, or otherwise just loud, formless noises, is much less so. Some sensitive Lirina may even grow nauseous at certain kinds of music or a certain poorness of performance. Lirina also do not gain sustenance from their own singing, although if they play an instrument, that will work as a food source. Some Lirina are able to taste music; it's estimated about 50% of all Lirina have this ability.

Lirina utilize a mixture of magic and technology. Most music is technology based as are all modern conveniences. Magic creates and shapes crystals. Crystal based magic is not a commonly known thing; it is a profession, similar to a trade, where a master crystal mage will pass on his knowledge to an apprentice. However, some certain low-level crystal lore is commonly known as it is ridiculously easy to learn. Small incantations to infuse a bit of crystal for light, as an example, are something almost every Lirina picks up at some point. A lot of their technology is a mixture of electronics and crystal magic, magic helping to nudge the technology in directions it otherwise wouldn’t be able to go. For people interested in playing crystal mages, the magic is basically to infuse crystals with some kind of ability or energy so that they can do other, more impressive things.

Lirina live approximately the same age as humans. They refer to their years as Stanzas.

Lirina live on a planet that naturally grows large amounts of crystal. Crystals there range wildly in size, color, and shape. A constant low-level wind blows causing the crystals to emit eerie musical tones (similar to an armonica or musical glasses.) Most Lirina cities harvest the crystal in the area and erect hand-crafted and strategically placed “landscaping” crystals.

Lirina are generally very peaceful as a species. That’s not to say that they all get along; however they are not commonly prone to violence. Using wit and wordplay is the primary mode of aggression. On the occasion that violence does occur, though, the Lirina favor crystal shaped swords that create a cacophonous noise when swung or crystal tipped arrows that shriek when fired. 

Due to their physiological dependence on music, every Lirina is musically talented in some manner. A lifetime of practice ensures that even those who by Lirina standards are not very good musicians are certainly passable by most other species’ standards. Most Lirina only bother to learn a single instrument or to sing. Dancing is rare as it does not produce adequate vibrations, but as a result, dancers are regarded much in the same way as celebrity artists are in human culture. On the flip side, highly skilled musicians are viewed more like highly celebrated chefs. There are plenty of other jobs that have absolutely nothing to do with music that many Lirina fill.

Lirina spend most of their lives in a manner similar to human culture. They are born, they are raised in a family, attend school, graduate to take up a job, and so on and so forth.

Lirina romance is similar to human romance in that they seek out a single partner. However, while romance and personality and likeability are all important factors, a key point in determining the compatibility between two Lirina is whether or not they ‘resonate.’ Lirina who are interested in another will take any opportunity given to sing or otherwise perform with their prospective mate. The idea is that the more easily they harmonize with one another, the more likely they will become a good, true match. Pairings of more than one Lirina do happen but they are very uncommon, similar to permanent threesomes in human culture. Lirina do not have any gender based hang-ups although male-female pairings are most common because of the dichotomy created by a bass voice and a more soprano voice being highly pleasing to their senses. A spouse is known as either a spouse or a partner, whichever term the couple is most comfortable with. They do not use gender-based words in their living arrangements.


It's unknown where the Lirina or their planet sprang up from; all that's known is that it has existed for a very, very long time. Until the mass spell that shifted the dimensions, they had no idea that other dimensions and intelligent species were out their and lived peaceful lives with virtually no wars. It was quite surprising for them to be launched into an alternate universe, replete with strange, mythical creatures, and the shift was very hard on the majority of the Lirina. Though they're beginning to cope with this world, they find it hard to adapt to the foreign culture here.
