Throughout history there have been stories of lycanthropy, most commonly werewolves. Subject to the cycles of the moon, werewolves are compelled to shift into a beastly wolf form at the full moon. In the same vein, they are less psychically powerful and resilient during the new moon. During their shift, they are self-aware but more inclined to behave in an animal-like fashion. While some werewolves embrace this call to wildness, others lock themselves away for the duration of the shift to avoid causing any possible problems or harm. As spoken up in lore, they are severely vulnerable to silver. They cannot break bonds of silver, even though they are several times stronger then a human being and weapons made of silver leave lasting damage. If lodged in their bodies silver can even poison them. While they can certainly be killed prematurely, their natural lifespan is easily twice that of a human. But werewolf is only half of Sylvester's genetic makeup.
Stories of fae beings have been found in every corner of the world and most of these ancient stories have some small seed of truth. From the sidhe of Ireland to the menehune of Hawai'i, nearly every culture has their own lore. Sylvester's other genetic half is from the moors of Germany; the fairy hounds. These fae creatures resemble lean canines. Like many of the fairy breeds, fae hounds are vulnerable to iron. They can be warded away with it and the mere touch of it can cause severe burns to their flesh. All in all they are seen as omens of either good or ill, but tend not to have much with humans or even other species. Generally insular, they have a pack mentality and an uncanny ability to make themselves scarce. They've been around the whole of history and have kept under the radar quite nicely. A fairy hound can live for centuries and when they die their body fades like fog on a sunny afternoon.
In Sylvester these two lineages blend. He is weak to both iron and silver, though not to such a degree. He is compelled to change at the full moon but the transition is easier for him than most and while he is more wild he is also more quiet. He is also able to easily shift at will. His bestial shape is more svelte and less wolf-like than than that of a true werewolf and while he possess less physical strength he is much more agile. He's still young so it will be several decades at the least before his lifespan is known.

As a one-off byproduct of a night of passion, Syl's sense of culture is shaped mostly by his werewolf father. While there are certainly throwbacks to his younger days with the fae hound pack, that's a more instinctual layer of his culture than a rational, overt one.

To Sylvester's knowledge, he is the only halfbreed of his kind. He was initially raised on the moors of Germany with a pack of fairy hounds. At the age of five he began exhibiting signs of his werewolf heritage with partial shifts. Knowing his time with her was coming to an end, his mother sought out his father, a werewolf she hadn't seen since the night of Syl's conception. It took some doing but she managed to track him to Ashmill City. Although he was obviously surprised, but took it all in relatively good stride and agreed to raise their offspring. Ever since then, the unique creature that is Syl has lived in Ashmill, learning to keep his true nature under wraps and doing his best to pass as a normal human.
